Losing Hopper

There is little positive to say about losing Hopper. If you've never experienced the loss of a pet you can't imagine the grief and the responsibility we feel. We met Hopper, then Paulie, in a Manhattan vet's basement turned cat shelter. We are here for one cat, Frank kept reminding me. Paulie kept jumping into our space, he was not to be overlooked. We were smitten. He's bonded with Luna, a kitten. Change of plans. Luna - tiny, so tiny, the smallest of meows. We grabbed them both and hailed a taxi back to Brooklyn. The second we got home Hopper, named for the artist Edward Hopper, jumped on the couch and was out like a light - instantly at home, instantly at peace. To say he was special would not do him justice but he was. He was special.
